The Quintessential Grand Tourer
The Bentley Continental GT, in Bentley’s own terms, is ‘the quintessential Grand Tourer’. Launched in 2003, it was the first Bentley to have had international appeal, partly as a consequence of improved production techniques and larger construction volume; the manifestation of Bentley’s 1994 concept Java.
Development was spearheaded after VW Groups purchase of the brand in 2002. It replaced the Continental T and R and saw the introduction of VW’s flagship W12 engine. The second generation released in 2011 continued in the same line as the original, featuring minimal styling differences, contrasted with the larger styling update when the Continental GT was first introduced.
The sportiest Bentley of all is the GT3-R, a limited production run model influenced by Bentley’s GT3 concept car designed for motorsport and noteworthy for its strong performance after being introduced in 2015.
Third Generation Continental GT
The latest Bentley Continental GT is now in its third generation, and incorporates a bold design, a technology-led active chassis and a 626 bhp W12 engine. The engine, which is designed, developed, and hand-built in Crewe UK, is an enhanced version of the one used in the Bentayga. Bentley’s own performance figures state 0–60 mph takes just 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 207 mph.
On the looks front, the GT’s signature matrix grille is even more pronounced; the nose is lower and the bonnet has been extended. The side profile is also shapelier, and the rear is more muscular than ever with the taillights now being ellipses, echoing the shape of the exhausts. Most importantly, however, is that the updated design is still recognisable as a Continental GT.
Start-stop technology is aligned to variable displacement which means that it cuts from 12 to six cylinders when coasting or cruising, increasing the range between fuel stops. A new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is in place which adds up to a Bentley that is both fast and refined.
