Production of the Aventador began in 2011 to replace the Murcielago. Lamborghini say its designers were inspired by the F22 Raptor and F-117 Nighthawk. Like the Raptor and Nighthawk, the Aventador isn’t renowned for its fuel economy managing a meagre 17 miles to the gallon when driven conservatively. Despite this its 6.5 litre V12 is capable of an astonishing top speed of 217 mph; pundits were quick to declare it the most thrilling Lamborghini yet.
The Aventador features a Carbon fibre “monocoque”, a self supporting structural shell around which the rest of the car is built. It’s a production technique first developed by McLaren’s Formula 1 team and made its way onto the roads in 1992 via the McLaren F1. The Aventador was Lamborghini’s first production car to benefit from this advanced chassis with the Huracán missing out.
