The Ferrari F50 was built to celebrate 50 years of Ferrari, and unlike the F40, was designed to be the closest thing to a road-legal Formula 1 car ever built by Ferrari. Manufactured from 1995 to 1997, the F50 was a two-seater Targa top sports car, described by Ferrari as the ‘extreme machine of the 90s’.
Its naturally aspirated 4.7L V12 engine was essentially a road-friendly version of the 3.5 litre V12 engine found in the 641 F1 race car. As a result, it produces 512 bhp – an increase over the F40’s 471. With the F50, Ferrari took a purist approach to its performance. It had no power steering, no power-assisted brakes and no ABS.
After the F40, where more cars were sold than initially intended, Ferrari decided that they were going to limit the number of models produced. This led to only 349 models being produced between 1995 and 1997; it’s a truly rare sight to see on the road today.
