The M3 is the motorsport versions of the 3 Series BMW. Created in the mid 80s, the M3 has gone through many incarnations over the years. A legitimate legend, the BMW M3 remains the only car ever to have earned more titles than the venerable Porsche 911 in motorsport, and also is the most successful touring, and grand touring car ever to have participated in racing.
The BMW M3 Saloon
The BMW M3 is built to challenge the limits of pure dynamics. The completely redeveloped 431 hp M TwinPower Turbo straight 6-cylinder petrol engine guarantees a powerful, precise drive. Innovations from motor sport like the Active M differential, Adaptive M suspension, M Servotronic or the 7-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic redefine the limits of possibility. Inside, the new M seats with their shell-like form offer side stability and create the ideal connection to the vehicle. Everything is orientated towards one thing: the driver.
BMW M3 – A History
The BMW E30 M3 was produced between 1986 and 1991 with a high revving 4 cylinder engine. It was predominantly produced as a coupe but there was a small run as a convertible. The coupe used the same body shell as the standard 3 series but with a few changed panels. However, all the brakes were unique to the M3, as was the unusual dog leg gearbox.
The BMW E36 M3 produced from 1992 to 1999 used a 6 cylinder engine and was the first M3 to have an automatic gearbox. In 1995, the engine size went from 3.0L to 3.2L.
The BMW E46 M3 was produced between 2000 and 2006 with the 3.2-litre engine in coupé and convertible body styles. A first for an M3 was that this model used an electrical drive by wire throttle system with 6 individual throttle bodies. Also, customers had the choice of a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed “SMG-II” auto transmission.
Special M3 Variations
The M3 GT in 1994 was a Race Homologation limited run of 356 cars. The UK got 50 of these, all in British Racing Green. The engine differed with its larger cams, higher compression ratio, adjustable spoilers and front splitter and was 30kg lighter than the standard M3.
The M3 Imola Individual was a run of 405 cars all in Imola Red. 50 cars made it to the UK with a different interior and GT Spoilers, electric seats and double spoke wheels.
