How is driving in the UK different from other countries?
Driving in a new country can take some adjusting to. The key factors to remember are that we drive on the left-hand side of the road, meaning most cars are right-hand drive. Traffic laws are very strict – all drivers must follow and adhere to the Highway Code or face penalties or even bans from driving; speed limits are in miles per hour (mph) and finally, car insurance is a legal requirement.
I’m bringing my own car to the UK – do I need car insurance?
Yes, you’ll need valid car insurance if you’re bringing your own vehicle into the UK – it’s a legal requirement for all cars on UK roads, regardless of whether the driver is a resident or non-resident.
Do I need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in the UK?
You generally don’t need an international driving permit to drive in the UK and can drive any type of small vehicle (for example, cars or motorcycles) as listed on your full and valid licence for 12 months.
Does the type of vehicle I drive in the UK affect my car insurance premiums?
The model and type of vehicle you drive can impact the cost of car insurance regardless of whether you live in the UK or are a non-resident. Key factors include the car’s value, engine size and performance, security features and even fuel type, which can all impact the price of your policy.
How long can I drive with an international driving licence in the UK?
Non-UK residents such as visitors and tourists can drive in the UK for up to a year (12 months) using a valid non-UK licence. EU/EEA licence holders can drive in the UK up to the age of 70, or for up to 3 years after becoming a UK resident (whichever is longer). Non-EU/EEA licence holders can drive for up to a year but must apply for a UK licence after this time, by exchanging their licence for a UK one.
