The Impreza STi is the high performance version of the WRX and was inspired by the fantastically successful rally team. This 4 wheeled drive boxer engined supercar is probably one the best ever performance cars and as such has a very large and passionate following. Although a Japanese supplied car, a very large number have been imported into the UK, of which a great many have been covered by us through our Subaru insurance schemes.
Made at the same time as the Lancer Evo, both these cars have had a huge rivalry over the years and the camps remain divided to this day. As insurers of both we are happy to sit on the sidelines and watch the fans argue it out!
Subaru Impreza WRX STi GC
As with the WRX the GC version was supplied from 1992 to 2000. Starting with a 250bhp engine, this was increased to over 300 but only officially given 280bhp due to an agreement in Japan. Many features of the STi are far improved over the standard WRX – suspension, brakes, interior, etc. This makes the car more desirable for those looking for a hardcore version and therefore many of the cars have had extensive modifications. These have often been done by the original Japanese owners and also by the many different tuners available in the UK. We have built our Subaru insurance schemes around this and we are happy to cover modifications – in fact our schemes assume this is the case.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi GD
The 2nd generation GD model was made from 2000 to 2008 and had a far stiffer chassis than the GC (although at the handicap of increased weight). 17 inch alloys and a 6 speed box (rather than the GC’s 5 speed) as well as bodywork revisions. Uprated brakes and anti-lock also moved this car on as well as increased electronic aids. 300bhp+ seemed to be the norm from the 2.0 litre boxer unit and this was increased to 2.5 litre during the GDs life. As with the GC there were so many different model variants but the common factor was one of the greatest performance cars ever made. This is therefore not a car for the beginner and we do look for a certain of experience when providing Subaru insurance – previous Impreza driving or something similar is a must.
Subaru Impreza WRX STi GR
The latest generation GR model came to the market in 2008 with a completely new body shape and a higher level of components to distinguish it from the WRX model, such as aluminium suspension components. Power is now well over 300bhp as standard with the STi 330S taking on the Lancer FQ330, and the CS400 Cosworth aimed squarely at the FQ400. Although not to everyone’s taste, the hatchback styling is here and is supplied in a car with all the usual Subaru reliability and pace.
The vast majority of Impreza STis have been bought over from Japan and we are extremely well known when it comes to Japanese Import insurance. Please do call and speak to one of our very knowledgeable experts.
