What Do School Minibus Insurance Policies Cover?
Our expert brokers can arrange insurance that covers multiple drivers and can include multiple minibuses, depending on the school’s circumstance. Any minibuses on policies covered by us will need to have the school’s logo on the rear, and have seatbelts for each seat, as per law.
We cover drivers over the age of 25 for educational purposes, due to safety reasons. Keith Michaels can also provide cover wheelchair adapted minibuses to allow for all schools and educational groups to travel together.
Our insurance doesn’t cover fare paying passengers, so if you offer a paid bus service, then we will not be able to cover this. However, if you offer a bus service as part of school fees, it’s best to speak to us to see how we can help.

School Minibus Insurance FAQs
What licence/permit do I need for school minibuses?
Drivers of school minibuses for educational institutions will need either a D1 licence entitlement, or a PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) licence if the D1 isn’t obtained yet. For any member of staff who drives the minibus and doesn’t yet have a D1 licence, the school must pay for the training for this.
Is it expensive to insure a school minibus?
As minibuses have a greater risk associated with them as they carry young children and teachers, they will be more expensive than cars. However, it’s important to get the right cover for your school as any liability in an accident can be very damaging.
Can teachers drive school minibuses?
Yes, teachers can volunteer to drive minibuses. However, a school cannot make it a requirement that a teacher drives a minibus, or docks benefits because they don’t drive one.
Will I need different insurance depending on how my school uses minibuses?
If you have one minibus that acts as a pupil pick up service, and one that acts as a pupil transport for school trips and goes further distances, then you will need to alert us when you get a quote to ensure we get the best cover for you.
As a variety of uses may mean different needs, speak to a specialist insurer to get the best cover for your needs.
