Skyline R32 – History
The R32 Skyline was launched in 1989 and was available as a 2-door coupe or 4-door saloon. The R32 featured various versions of the RB-series straight-6 engine, with improved cylinder heads and a new electronic injection system. Most models also had four-wheel steering with the rear wheels hydraulically linked to the front steering.
The 2.5-litre GTS-25 became one of the first Japanese production cars to feature a 5-speed automatic transmission. The GTS-t came in standard and Type M configurations, with the Type M having larger five-stud 16-inch wheels, four piston front callipers and twin piston rears plus other minor differences. ABS was optional (except for the GT-R and GTS-4), mechanical LSD was standard on the GTR and viscous LSD was standard on all turbo models.
The R32 was designed for one purpose only, to be successful (or win) Group A races in Japan. And it did win – it won 29 races from 29 starts. The car’s soul was the famous RB 2.6-litre in-line six DOHC twin-turbo engine, which produced 276bhp and was under-stressed and ripe for tuning. Allegedly even then, near to 1,000bhp could be achievable.
On launch in 1989 the R32 had staggering performance: 0-62mph took 5.6sec with a claimed top speed of 156mph. This meant it was quicker than the BMW (E30) M3 and the Porsche 911 (930) Turbo of the time. And the R32 was not just quick in a straight line; its tremendous A/B road capability is down to its four-wheel-drive system.
In order to race, homologation meant that a Nismo R32 appeared in 1990 with 560 built – 500 for the road and the balance went to racing teams. These came with improved aerodynamics – some had lighter panels and different turbos yet all of them were finished in Grey metallic.
