Please note that many insurers will no longer offer cover for vehicles in the Land Rover Group, and access to policies is limited.
The Land Rover Discovery is known to most people simply as the ‘Disco’ which is a series of medium to large SUVs produced by Land Rover. The Discovery is now in its fifth iteration having been launched in 1989.
Discovery Over the Years
The first Discovery was created as an inexpensive option to the standard Range Rover of that time. Although positioned below the Range Rover, the Discovery was longer and higher, which provided more room in the back and allowed for optional additional seats. The good use of space has always been a key Discovery attribute and the model continues to offer the seven-seat option today.
The second Discovery was simply called the Series II and ran from 1998 to 2004. It featured an extended rear body, but otherwise, was mostly a face-lift.
The third Discovery appeared in 2004 and was named the Discovery 3. This model had fully independent suspension with its separate but integrated body and frame structure.
The fourth Discovery appeared in 2009 which again was mainly a facelift and was marketed as the Discovery 4.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery went on sale in 2017 and shares a platform with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, having a unitised body structure which makes it lighter than its predecessors.
The design of this Discovery is more like the smaller Discovery Sport, being rounder in shape and forgoing the traditional more angular design. The tail lights have changed from being vertical to horizontal, and the tailgate is no longer horizontally split, having been replaced with a top hinged tailgate. The roof retains the famous step but it is now largely cosmetic when compared to previous models.
For some customers the fifth Discovery is viewed as being very modern and potentially less practical/rugged. This will be the first Discovery that will be manufactured outside the UK, with production taking place in Slovakia.
